My ramblings on Occult Day.
The website Holiday Insights inform us, November 18, 2011 is Occult Day. In keeping true with occult teachings, the origins of the day remain a mystery.
Dictionary.com defines Occult with seven different adjective meanings, including: secret, communicated only to the initiated, or concealed. According to the definition, there is nothing dark and foreboding about the word. Bringing to light, that many clubs or societies could be considered occult societies, such as: Masonic Societies, Moose, Elk, or Eagles, how about the different sororities and fraternities with the different Universities? With the definition Dictionary.com offers, they would all be considered ‘the occult’. And let us not forget the churches, with their rites to become clergy, bishops, cardinals and Pope. The secrets they hold for depossessing a possessed person is definitely considered occult. Yet, with all their secret (think Occult) knowledge, they look down on any form of knowledge they do not understand.
With all the negative feelings about the word, occult, I decided to do an exercise this morning and substitute the word ‘occult’ for conceal, invisible and unearthly. I found it rather interesting when I ran across a passage from Shakespeare and substituted the word occult for his word secret. Then I began doing it to other quotes.
Replace the word ‘occult’ for the word ‘secret’ in these original quotes.
